TEACHING
IN THE TRADITION OF THE HIMALAYAN SAGES
Yoga is a systematic science of joining again with your Essence
or True Self. Yoga itself is not a religion, although its
practices are found in the sacred scriptures of most religions.
Using methods of
self-exploration, self-discovery, and self-realization you
are guided through the layers of your being, to the direct
experience of the center of consciousness through yoga meditation.
Raja Yoga is also
called Astanga Yoga, or “The Eight Fold Path,”
because its eight steps trace a systematic path of regulation
and control from the physical body, to senses, to the subtlest
manifestations of the mind.
MISSION
The Mission of Turning Light Yoga Practice and Learning Center
IS the Asatoma Mantra: to lead students from the unreal to
the real, from darkness to light, from mortality to immortality.
One of the first steps along this path is to know thyself:
to know one’s body, mind, and soul.
WHAT
WE DO
Through class offerings in Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breath
and energy), Dhyana and Dharana (concentration and meditation),
yoga philosophy (eastern mysticism) and other tools such as
MBTI and Polarity Maps, students will be able to choose paths
of exploration to suit their life goals. From needs as simple
as stress reduction or increased flexibility, to greater self-knowledge
to a clearer mind to wisdom and enlightenment, there is something
here for you! Choose from regular Hatha classes and a variety
of special sessions. Apply your learning to enhance your personal
and professional life. (Courses listed with an * after

ABOUT
SWAMI RAMA & THE HIMALAYAN TRADITION
The systematic
practice of Yoga Meditation comes from the ancient cave monasteries
of the Himalayas. This lineage of teachers is at least
5,000 years old, though eternal in nature. It includes
Swami Rama and his teachers, Bengali Baba and Mahavatar Baba,
known as Babaji.
One of the greatest
adepts, teachers, writers, and humanitarians of the 20th century,
Swami Rama is the founder of the Himalayan Institute in the
US. Born in Northern India, he was raised from early
childhood by a Himalayan sage, Bengali Baba. Under
the guidance of his master he traveled from monastery to monastery
and studied with a variety of Himalayan saints and sages,
including his grandmaster, who was living in a remote region
of Tibet.
In addition to this
intense spiritual training, Swami Rama received higher education
in both India and Europe. From 1949 to 1952, he held
the prestigious position of Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham
in South India. Thereafter, he returned to his master
to receive further training at his cave monastery, and finally
in 1969, came to the United States where he founded the Himalayan
Institute. His best known work, Living With the Himalayan
Masters, reveals the many facets of this singular adept and
demonstrates his embodiment of the living tradition of the
East.
